Not For Everyone

As we approach the solar eclipse this Wednesday, and with Venus having recently moved into Libra, I've been thinking a lot about relationships.

About the people we naturally feel at ease with, and those we don't.

On a reflective walk this week, I spotted these chalk symbols drawn on the pavement, presumably by a child.

Children seem to have such a natural relationship with symbols. They draw what comes to them instinctively. Perhaps that's something we lose a little as we grow older—the ability simply to notice what we feel and trust what comes naturally.

Back to relationships.

For much of my life, it’s been easy to believe that if I was kind enough, understanding enough, patient enough—or perhaps tried a little harder—I could find a comfortable place with almost anyone.

But I'm not sure that's true for me anymore.

I am not for everyone.

And perhaps, just as importantly, everyone is not for me.

There’s something freeing about accepting this.

It doesn't require anyone to be wrong. Sometimes we simply see the world differently. We value different things. We communicate differently. We move through life in ways that don't always sit comfortably alongside one another.

And if we want to preserve some kind of harmony, perhaps that needs to be okay.

As I've grown older, authenticity has become increasingly important to me. I've also become much more aware of moments of incongruence—when what I'm hearing and what I'm sensing don't quite seem to match.

Sometimes my body seems to notice before my mind does. Something feels off. I am learning not to dismiss that feeling quite so quickly.

The joy of being sensitive!

I am learning to notice how I feel around people. Whether I can relax and simply be myself, or whether something within me tightens or withdraws.

Perhaps part of growing is learning to listen to that response.

Not every relationship needs to be fixed or fully understood. Sometimes more space is all that's required.

Perhaps the real gift is finding the people and places where we don't have to try quite so hard to belong.

Where we can simply be ourselves.

My soul moment this week:

Each day offers us an opportunity to come back to ourselves in some way.

Perhaps eclipse season simply brings some of that into sharper focus—what feels true, what doesn't, and what we may already know but haven't quite been ready to acknowledge.
